Navigating Digital Success: Key Factors for Effective Digital Strategies

I find hard to believe that I have been working with Information Technology for over 40 years! "You don't look old enough Ray" I hear you say..

During the course of this time, I have worked with many businesses, small and large, helping them implement frameworks to help develop, manage and implement sustainable digital strategies.

These have ranged in complexity in terms of both process and governance, however there have always been a number of core principles that I personally abide by.

In this post I share a number of these principles, they are not "rocket science" by surprisingly are often overlooked...

    • Understanding Business Needs:
Start by comprehensively understanding your organisation's core functions and goals. IT does not work in a vacuum

    • Alignment with Business Strategy:
Ensure your digital strategy aligns seamlessly with overall business objectives, both short and medium term, do not work in silos!

    • Strategic Awareness:
Try to stay vigilant to potential developments within the business and market, then make timely adjustments to the digital strategy. Setup regular engagement opportunities between your tech and business leaders.

    • Anticipating Future Trends:
Try to foster a forward-thinking approach to anticipate and capitalise on emerging trends and technological advancements by establishing regular engagements with your key vendors and suppliers.

    • Choosing the Right Tech Stack:
Carefully select a technology stack that meets your organisation's specific needs that can offer flexibility to supports the digital strategy, and critically that can be resourced!

    • Optimise Technology:
Always look to reduce complexity and consolidate services where possible, stripping out from your organisation any overlapping or redundant systems and infrastructure.

    • Avoiding Tech Fads:
Stay current with technology trends while avoiding short-lived fads, focusing on enduring and proven technologies.

    • Optimising Organisational Structure:
Ensure the right resources and organisational structures are in place, including skilled personnel. This is often a key area that is overlooked.

    • Maximizing Technology Utilisation:
Empower the workforce to make the best use of technology, maximising the benefits of digital transformation.

In conclusion, these overarching principles have served me well during my career in IT thus far, and will provide you with a practical framework to underpin your journey in IT service provision in today’s increasingly complex business and digital landscape.
